“Pardes” is a 1997 Bollywood musical drama directed by Subhash Ghai. The film explores the contrast between Indian and Western cultures through the story of Kishorilal, a wealthy NRI who wishes to marry his son, Rajiv, to a traditional Indian girl, Ganga. He believes this union will imbue his Westernized son with Indian values. Kishorilal sends his foster son, Arjun, to India to facilitate the alliance. As Ganga and Rajiv’s relationship progresses, cultural differences emerge, leading to misunderstandings. Arjun, who understands both cultures, becomes Ganga’s confidant, and their bond deepens, leading to a complex love triangle.
