Satya (1998) is a landmark Hindi-language crime drama directed by Ram Gopal Varma, renowned for its gritty portrayal of Mumbai’s underworld.  The film follows Satya (J. D. Chakravarthy), a newcomer to Mumbai who becomes entangled in the city’s criminal underbelly.  He befriends Bhiku Mhatre (Manoj Bajpayee), a volatile gangster, and gets drawn into a world of violence, betrayal, and moral ambiguity.  Urmila Matondkar plays Vidya, a singer who becomes romantically involved with Satya, adding emotional depth to the narrative.  The film’s raw storytelling, realistic characters, and memorable dialogues have earned it cult status in Indian cinema.
